The Spook School

Unpop are very excited to bring you a night of awesome indiepop from Edinburgh's very own The Spook School!

Newly signed to Fortuna Pop! and hotly anticipated to do great things, they have been variously described as "particularly cute and particularly addictive", "catchy as hell" and as being the way "you always want Belle and Sebastian to sound like, but they never do" (whatever the chuff THAT means).

In any case, if you like intelligent raucous noisy indiepop and you aren't afraid of topless moustachioed drummers propositioning you, you should come and see for yourself quite why this superb little band have stirred up such an ardent following for themselves over the past few months.

Support comes from The Occasional Flickers and Colin's Godson and all in all it should be an excellent evening. We look forward to seeing you there.

Only £4.00

Includes free entry to the Egg afterwards where Unpop will be the guest DJ's.

Saturday 27th of April

Blackfriars
36 Bell Street

10.30pm to 3am
£4, mixtapes, badges and cake for early arrivals!

Aye, that's right; Unpop is going West once again. We had so much fun the last time we put on a night in Blackfriars, we had to come back and do it all over again. There will be cake, there will be mixtapes, there will be so very much indiepop dancing action. There will probably be a cavalcade of cardigans and gingham mittens.

We like:

Veronica Falls - Belle & Sebastian - Orange Juice - Jens Lekman - Bearsuit - Tullycraft - The Pains of Being Pure At Heart - Allo Darlin' - The Fall - The Magnetic Fields - The Hidden Cameras - Neutral Milk Hotel - Hefner - Stereolab - Helen Love - Acid House Kings - The Field Mice - Felt - Bis - Standard Fare - Architecture In Helsinki - The Pastels - The Flatmates - Jonathan Richman - The Smiths - Talulah Gosh, Kenickie - Mates of State - Stereo Total - & Other twee nonsense...

Unpop also likes Glasgow.

If that sounds like your cup of tea then we very much hope to see you on the 27th April when we will be breaking from tradition and putting on a night on a Saturday instead of our usual Friday slot. Eek! That's right, we're so excited we're actually squeaking.

Wear your heart on your sleeve and shoes you can shimmy in. We reckon it's going to be good.

Unpop goes to London!
Guest DJs at Scared To Dance

Monday, 6 August 2012

Unpop #10, Festival Special

Spook School, Indiepop Dance Party!
Though chock-full of comedians who have glossy posters everywhere (have you checked your front door yet?), the venerable Edinburgh Fringe Festival is suffering from a crippling indie pop deficit. This August's Unpop will act as a stimulus package for all pop fans, who would otherwise be wasting away in their rooms for want of listening to The Aislers Set through relatively powerful speakers.

As per the norm, Unpop brings out the heavenly pop hits, all the way from jangle pop to post-jangle pop and jangly pop...expect to hear the likes of:

-- Heavenly -- Orange Juice -- Pavement -- Jens Lekman -- Belle & Sebastian -- Standard Fare -- The Clean -- Half Man Half Biscuit -- Evans The Death -- The Smiths -- The Wedding Present -- Helen Love -- Jonathan Richman -- Kenickie -- Bearsuit -- The Breeders -- The Fall -- Pulp -- The Aislers Set -- Of Montreal -- Deerhoof -- Camera Obscura and many more...

We're pleased to announce that our guest DJs for the night are local indie pop heroes The Spook School, who will undoubtedly play a set of such brilliance that we will all be rendered deaf by sheer amazement at their curatorial skills.

Also, there'll be free badges, sweets and a limited number of C60 mixtapes on the night, so get down early to increase your haul of twee.

The Just Joans, The Spook School and The Hector Collectors

Unpop is delighted to prestent The Just Joans with there Edinburgh launch of their new record "Buckfast Bottles In The Rain". The evening will also feature The Spook School and The Hector Collectors!

The Wee Red Bar

Only £4 and includes entry to The Egg.

Wee Red Bar, Spook School, Hector Collectors
The Just Joans
If the Just Joans were to be personified, they would a combination of early '60s Tom Courtenay and Stephen Patrick Morrissey, drinking Buckfast on a park bench in Motherwell. Indie pop legends in their own right, having played Popfests around they world (as well as being namechecked in Allo Darlin's "If Loneliness Was Art"), The Just Joans are a fantastic live act. Unfortunately, their live appearances round these parts are rare. Fortunately, we've got them this time for an Edinburgh launch of their new record "Buckfast Bottles In The Rain". It will be awesome.

http://www.weepop.net/releases.php#POP!050

The Spook School
Kieran from Unpop used to say that Edinburgh didn't have any indie pop bands apart from ballboy. What a misguided fool he is - apparently, there are several, one of whom are the excellent The Spook School. Fresh from their breakthrough appearance on the last Unpop tape (!), these poptastic kids will sweetly rock your world; if you haven't seen them live, now's your chance to redeem yourself.

The Hector Collectors
It might be almost a decade since The Hector Collectors played Edinburgh supporting Half Man Half Biscuit and they are not to be missed. Expect the finest ramshackle indie pop.

Unpop! Indiepop Dance Party # 8!

Unpop is back!

Friday 24th February 2012
The Wee Red Bar
£4, Free mixtapes, badges and cake for early arrivals.
11pm to 3am

http://www.facebook.com/unpopdanceparty

It's been too long, folks. After having a super awesome time bringing Unpop to Indietracks in Derbyshire in July, we had to take a wee break for other somewhat less awesome commitments. However, 2012 sees the return of Unpop to our beloved home town. Since July, Team Unpop have been busy thesis-writing, putting on various gigs, pushing real ale, home-brewing, watching documentaries about pop bands and even saving people's lives (no shit!). But finally, our slumbering indie pop appetites will be sated by playing jangly tunes until the early, bleary hours of Saturday morning...

Being long enough after the 14th to not really count, let's call it a Pseudo-Valentine's hop, dedicated to both pandas (because they're around these days, adorning our posters and whatnot) and groundhogs (cos it's in February).

C86, modern twee, jangle pop and generally heavenly pop hits will be busted out, alongside many other melodic classics.

Wear your heart on sleeve, dress up for a dance and shimmy along with us for the night. As always, cakes, goodies and Unpop's 9th mixtape are there for early-comers, and all for the very reasonable price of £4! The fey will rise again!

Tapes and tapes and tapes and tapes and...

Hello all,

As you know, Unpop puts out a mixtape for each one of its nights, painstakingly "mixed" and with its tracklisting neurotically jumbled about. We've always loved this often unloved format (didn't Jack White give out about cassettes in an interview a few years back? anyhow, Meg's way cooler..), probably because of our formative music purchases being on tape and because we can still remember meticulously making mixtapes that you knew would help the morning walk to school as an angstified teenager far more bearable (this is not to mention the legendary nature of C81* and C86). We're pretty much always psyched to see new tapes being released, and I was really happy to pick up a new tape only compilation by Fierce Panda records called TAPE FEAR in the course of a brief visit to London town earlier this week. It contains some Unpop favourites like the Dum Dum Girls and Tennis and is basically a collection of new/newish American (mainly) lo fi indiepop and indierock with lots of awesome bands that I'd never heard before (Savoir Adore and Weekends to name but two). It's really poppy and fuzzy and suits the tape format down to the ground - get yrself a copy if you can (available from http://www.fiercepanda.co.uk/news.php?story=258, but it's a limited edition-er so be quick or be dead, friends!)

In tape making solidarity(é),
Unpop x

* Gotta give props to this - it has Scritti Politti AND Pere Ubu on it, ffs!

Mayday bank holiday special with Pat Nevin!

The New Year has passed by slowly, and not without its fair share of sunny days, grey days and outbreaks of random snowing or sleet. Fortunately, spring time can be trusted to be here in our temperate climate by about the end of April, which, luckily, is the time the next Unpop is on.

Unpop 7 will bring you all the things you've learned to love about the night - the free mixtapes, cakes, badges, the awesome tunes, the friendly atmosphere - and even more, in the form of special guest DJ PAT NEVIN!!

The capital letters indicate how really excited we are to have Pat spinning indie pop on the night, and this Radio 5 commentator/former footballer/general legend comes with an impressive dj-ing pedigree - he has played at pop discos to great success throughout the land for years, and his djing was considered one of the highlights of ATP's (Belle and Sebastian curated) Bowlie II weekender before Christmas.

So there. No excuse. Come along and celebrate the late-coming of Spring with your friendly neighbourhood dance party.

Expect to hear the likes of Belle and Sebastian, The Smiths, Pavement, Hefner, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, The Royal We, Of Montreal, The New Pornographers, The Field Mice, Jens Lekman, Betty and the Werewolves, Orange Juice, 'Allo Darlin, The Wave Pictures and other pop classics

The 6th Unpop

Mixtapes, badges, cake and more for the first 50 people!

Guest DJ, Paul Richards from Scared to Dance
...http://www.scaredtodance.co.uk/

After a snowed in winter, punctuated by the brilliance of Bowlie II in December and many seasonal whiskies, Unpop is back to ring in the new year with our customary batch of twee and general heavenly indie pop hits. Our last outing was during the inaugural Edinburgh Popfest and it's safe to say we had an awesome time dj-ing on its opening night. Now we hit the Wee Red for a February 11th pop bonanza.

Influenced by the impending arrival of Valentine's Day, we'll be spinning lots of pro/anti love songs, from the Magnetic Fields and The Smiths, to Hefner and Tallulah Gosh.

Paul from London's Scared to Dance will be a very special guest, playing his own idiosyncratic selection of indiepop, new wave and post-punk. His night and fanzine have been a beacon of light in the London scene for quite a while, and we're really excited to have him here for Unpop.

Wear your heart on sleeve, dress up for a dance and shimmy along with us for the night. Cakes, goodies and Unpop's 6th mixtape await you, all for the very reasonable price of £4!

Unpop's first birthday and popfest spectaculaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar!!

Mixtapes, badges, cake and more for the first 100 people!

After our autumnal dance-a-thon, Unpop is back and ready for action as part of the inaugural Edinburgh Popfest. Taking its cue from similar celebrations of indie pop worldwide, it'll be running from the 22nd to the 24th of October at venues around Auld Reekie. Edinburgh popfest boasts some of the best exponents of the genre, like Bearsuit, Darren Hayman of Hefner fame, Suburban Kids With Biblical Names and Edinburgh's own Ballboy. Unpop will be part of the Friday night event will be creating our unique indiepop dance party after sets from Ballboy and Withered Hand.

This will also be Unpop's 1st Birthday so no expense will be spared to ensure that this is a spectacular evening.

Only £4.00 and free if you have a popfest ticket.

In case you hadn't heard, Unpop plays the best of classic indie pop, from C86 luminaries like The Wedding Present and The Pooh Sticks, through some of the greats of '90s music like Belle and Sebastian and Hefner, and onto modern jangley bands like The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart and Strawberry Fair.

As usual, we'll be providing a cavalcade of additional benefits to awesome dancing tunes: badges with nifty animals on them, our 5th Unpop mixtape, cakes and assorted sweets... so really, you can't help but love it!

Love,
Team Unpop

4th Unpop, Friday the 24th September!

Hello indiepop kids!

Team unpop have spent the summer on holiday from the Wee Red Bar but are very excited to announce our imminent return there planned for Friday 24th September!

Yes, we have spent the long, not-so-hot months of summer riding steam trains at Indietracks, paddling in the sea at Cramond, picnicking in the Meadows, camping 'neath the starry skies, singing Magnetic Fields songs around the campfire and generally engaging in all manner of twee summery fun. But now, as the nights draw in, the trees start to turn and town starts to fill up with wide-eyed, tiny freshers once more, our minds turn to indiepop dance parties, disco lights and making the mixtape to end all mixtapes.

The autumn has lots of indiepop fun in store, with Popfest just around the corner in October. Make sure you don't miss the start of all the fun; come and dance the night away with us at unpop. Aside from the best selection of indiepop records in town, there'll be the usual free cake, badges and mixtapes for the first fifty people through the door. So, send us your requests, put on your dancing shoes, come over and say hello. We've really missed you!

Love from,

team unpop
